qode
Just tried the neomedia qode reader on my n95. qode is an barcode reader from neomedia that does not relying on encoding an url in the code but an ID, it doesn’t seem to read qr codes and datamatrix, but 1D UPC/EAN and 2D Aztec codes. So when you invoke a code, the ID is read, send to the server and then resolved to a URL. The reader works pretty quick, I am however disappointed that there is no way to create my own codes on their site, I just can try their two examples. I assume that this is due to the fact that this is exactly what they want to sell and that this would open the gates to have it flooded with urls. I wonder how the reader and the server will perform when you talk about millions and millions of pages. Good thing that with QR codes we don’t have to worry about that, the URL is encoded in the code and that is all there is required to use it. Using an ID based approach also adds another point of failure. For qr-codes there are all kinds of url generators for you to use like the ones from quickmark and kaywa below.

Besides that the availability of readers for handsets just doesn’t compare with the variety of quality readers for qr codes, see our previous post.
UPDATE:
I also tested wether it can handle QR Code or Datamatrix, unfortunately not.
Also here is a list of replies from the neomedia crew, see for yourself:

Point taken: Correction: qode is NeoMedia’s reader application. qode can read and decipher 1D UPC/EAN and 2D Aztec codes. I corrected that above.
To clarify: The main point of the test was to see whether I can just start creating codes that link to any content. Didn’t find that.
